In painting the American West, I often go far west to the 50th state of Hawaii. Hawaii is not just a state of the Union, it is also a state of mind. There is feeling of serenity and ageless beauty. This is the most remote place in the world but it is also the crossroads for many cultures, from the original Polynesians to the Europeans to the Asians who came to these enchanting isles. Built from lava rock rising from the sea floor, it is inhabited by flora and fauna that have arrived from the three Ws: Wind, Water and Wings. Sometimes I’m too relaxed to remember to paint.
